Neck and Face Liposuction

What is
Neck and Face Liposuction?

Sometimes, no matter how healthily you eat or how much you exercise, some spots on your body are just stubborn, and don’t lose fat. This is often true of areas such as the hips, thighs or love handles, but it can also occur on the face and neck. Some people find this to be difficult to bear because while the rest of their body may be slim, their neck and face are still a bit chubby, which puts them out of proportion and causes a disharmonious appearance.

It’s possible to address those trouble spots with liposuction, which will remove the excess fat, and help to balance your appearance. As a bonus, bringing your face and neck in line with the rest of your body can also boost your self-esteem.

Common Neck and Face Liposuction
Treatment Areas

One of the reasons liposuction is such an effective treatment for removing excess fat is that it’s highly targeted. This is due to the main instruments used in the procedure—the liposuction cannulas.

These tools come in a wide variety of types and sizes, each with its own purpose. The cannula used for face and neck liposuction is very small, and is designed for precision in the following treatment areas:

Double Chin
Few things make you look overweight the way a double chin does. For some people, it’s a matter of genetics, and simply the way their face is structured, and has nothing at all to do with weight. The region directly under the face is called the submental chin, which is where the double chin occurs. Fat in this area is usually soft and not very fibrous, so it responds well to liposuction. Usually, only a local anesthetic is required to treat this area.

Depending on the extent of your double chin, you may be able to pursue an alternative to liposuction called BELKYRA™ (KYBELLA™ in the United States). This treatment consists of a series of injections that destroy fat cell membranes, allowing the fat to be absorbed by the body. The result is a reduced submental chin, and a slimmer profile.

Cheeks
Chubby, cherubic cheeks are cute in children, but they usually don’t suit an adult face very well. Some people have a genetic predisposition to excessive fat in the cheeks, which can make you appear overweight even if you’re slender. Strategic and carefully targeted face liposuction can slim your cheeks, and give you a more contoured appearance.

Jowls
The region just below the jawline is often referred to as the jowls. In addition to prominence in this area caused by weight gain, the jowls also begin to sag with age. Face liposuction can address excess fat in this area, but if you’re concerned about how this area looks due to age, a facelift may be a better option for you.

Buccal Fat Pads
Located inside the center cheek in the deeper layers of tissue, at or just above the level of the upper lip, are small, localized buccal fat pads. They’re responsible for what some refer to as “chipmunk cheeks” in some people. Liposuction may not be enough to address this area, and the buccal fat may need to be removed via incisions made inside the mouth.

Neck
Your neck contains two muscles that extend from your jaw down just past your collarbones. These muscles are called platysmal bands, and just like any other muscle in our body they can weaken and lose their elasticity as we age. This, in turn, can cause the fat in the neck to protrude, and can even cause the skin to sag, producing what some refer to as “turkey neck.”

In addition to neck liposuction, it may be necessary to tighten the platysmal bands in order to achieve complete improvement of the neck. You may also choose to address sagging skin in your neck with laser skin tightening or Wrinkle Removal, both of which can help to rejuvenate your neck, and restore your youthful appearance.

Face and Neck Liposuction
Results

Removing facial fat from beneath skin with poor elasticity will result in sagging skin, making you look increasingly aged, which will undermine the purpose of having face liposuction in the first place.

The ability of your skin to “bounce back” after face or neck liposuction depends on several factors, including but not limited to age, scarring, and lifestyle habits such as a history of smoking. Your surgeon will evaluate the condition of your skin during your consultation, and will make recommendations to help you get the best results.
