What types of liposuction methods are there?
Today, physicians can perform several types of liposuction/lipoplasty. There include the traditional technique, tumescent technique, laser assisted and ultra-sound assisted.
At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, physicians specialize in the tumescent technique and laser assisted method. For both, the size of incision(s) is smaller than other methods as well as the amount of trauma to the target area during the liposuction procedure is less, minimizing discomfort experienced by the patient and expediting recovery time.
What areas can be targeted with liposuction?
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, can remove excess fat in the buttocks, waist, back, thighs, ankles, abdomen, chest, upper arms, face, and neck. For many, these areas generally do not respond well to exercise and a healthy diet and liposuction is the only way they can eliminate excess fat.
What areas cannot be targeted with liposuction?
It is dangerous to target the area behind the knee with liposuction, as vital nerves and blood vessels are present.
Is liposuction a method of weight loss?
Liposuction is not a method of weight loss. It is designed to remove excess fat in the target areas in order to enhance the overall contour of the area. The best results will appear on those who are in good health overall and are not obese.
What makes an individual a good candidate for liposuction at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic?
Those who are mentally stable, have realistic expectations and goals of the liposuction procedure, are of normal weight and in relatively good health.
So what's so good about it?
Liposuction is an extremely effective way to get rid of fat in an area that does not respond well to exercise and a healthy diet. The size of the area will also reduce, improving an individual's body contour.
How about cellulite?
Liposuction can minimize the amount of cellulite in an area, dramatically reducing “orange peel” skin. However, it is best to consult a physician to find out if liposuction is suitable to remove cellulite on your body. Another method may be more suitable, such as Endermologie®.
What should I look for in a physician when choosing who to perform the liposuction procedure?
First, the physician should be licensed to practice in Ontario and be in good standing of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). It is important that the physician have plenty of experience in performing liposuction. Because skin elasticity improves results of the procedure, a good knowledge of dermatology can also help (in fact, your skin in the target area will be assessed during the consultative period).
You may also want to check out their references and contact past clients.
Is the procedure painful?
Some type of anesthesia will be administered during the lipoplasty procedure at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, whether it be localized or general. As a result, you will not feel anything during treatment. Medication will be prescribed to eliminate or minimize pain following surgery.
How long does a procedure take?
The length of your liposuction procedure at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic depends on such factors as the method used, amount of fat to be removed, number of areas targeted and if it is combined with another procedure. However, a single procedure usually takes about an hour or more.
Should I expect pain during the procedure?
At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, we make sure our patients do not experience any discomfort during the laser hair removal procedure. Though most patients do not require anything, if any discomfort is felt, a topical anesthetic can be applied.
What should I expect following the liposuction procedure?
Expect to experience some amount of pain, swelling, soreness and perhaps bruising in the area treated. This will be at its worst in the first couple of days following the procedure, gradually wearing off over a period of two weeks or more. Generally, you may get up and walk around the day following surgery and return to work (if it doesn't require strenuous physical activity and physical exertion) within a week. Strenuous physical excercise, such as doing aerobics, can be performed typically after a period of 3 weeks.
You'll also wear a specially designed garment to while you recover to promote healing, for a duration outlined by your physician at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic.
Are the results permanent?
If you exercise and maintain a healthy diet, the results of your liposuction procedure will last as long as age and other such factors don't take their toll. However, if you gain fat following the liposuction procedure, you should expect your whole body to experience this weight gain including the treated area. Fortunately, only the few fat cells remaining in the area will be affected, reducing its overall capacity. Therefore, you will never be able to accumulate as much fat as before treatment.
