About Lip Augmentation
What's more attractive than full, luscious and kissable lips? Stop using that lipstick to enhance your lips when you can have it permanently, and naturally, with lip augmentation.
Soft, supple lips are a want for most women, and men. Enhancing the shape can make the lips appear more desirable, kissable and proportioned to the rest of your face. Whether you are born with thin, uneven lips, or have noticed that the fullness in them has diminished over the years, there are several types of lip augmentation treatments available.
Ways the Lips can be Augmented
There are 3 basic ways to change the size and shape of the lips:
- Dermal Filler- prefilled syringes that can contain plumping ingredients. There are various types of dermal fillers on the market, ranging from permanent to temporary.
- Fat Transfer- fat can be taken from an area on the body (for example the abdomen) and then injected into the lips. This will add volume, and is a viable option for some patients as they do not want a foreign substance in their body A popular downfall is that results can appear uneven and not long lasting.
- Lip Implant- by permanently placing a silicone implant into either the upper or lower lip, volume will be added, along with a permanent shape to the lips. This is an option that Toronto Cosmetic Clinic does not offer, as sometimes the implants can shift or migrate.
At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic we prefer to use Dermal Fillers to augment the lips, as this option provides the most natural, smooth and voluminous result, with minimal risks in comparison to other procedures. Back to the top
What can lip augmentation do?
Depending on the quantity and what product of dermal filler you use, most commonly you can:

- Alter the Overall Shape of the Lips Back to the top
Lip Augmentation at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic
At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, our trained and experienced injectors provide lip augmentation in a safe and professional setting in less than 30 minutes!
First you will have a consultation with our injectable fillers specialist to help you determine not only the type of lip augmentation treatment you will undergo, but also the desirable amount of change to your lip contour that will achieve the results you're looking for.
To ease any discomfort, a topical numbing agent cream is applied. Then the injection will take place, which involves having a small needle injected into various areas of the lips. Either the upper, lower, or both can be injected.
You'll notice that a single lip augmentation procedure can improve the balance of your facial features dramatically. The volume of your lips will increase, subtly and with natural looking results. You are able to resume your normal activities right after the injection.

Cost of Lip Augmentation
At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, most of our patients use a dermal filler to enhance their lips. The price is based on the type and amount of filler that is contained within a syringe. Most commonly we use JUVEDERM®. The starting price per syringe of Juvederm is $400 plus tax. In most cases, one syringe is needed, which will last 6-12 months. After this period another injection will be needed to sustain lip volume. Fat injection to the lips starts from $2,000.

Types of Fillers
There are many types of dermal fillers on the market, both temporary and permanent. At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic we have the full range of JUVEDERM® products, produced from the pharmaceutical manufacturer Allergan (who are also the same makers of BOTOX COSMETIC®). JUVEDERM® is comprised of a hyaluronic acid gel, which is a substance that we already have within our bodies. JUVEDERM® is a temporary filler.
At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic we prefer to use non-permanent and temporary fillers, as there are less complications and the results are smooth, natural and subtle.

Swelling after Lip Injections
Post lip augmentation swelling can be a love for some patients but also a deterrent for others as they do not want “duck lips” or make it seem too obvious that they had a filler injected. At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, we have various dermal fillers that are intended to reduce the amount of swelling.
The lips are a bit more sensitive to swelling, compared to other areas of the face as they are are highly vascular. Instantly after the injection the lips are enlarged mainly due to the trauma of the needle. The next morning you will find the lips to be a little more swollen than the day before, since dermal fillers have a high affinity for water.
To minimize swelling you can apply ice packs at 20 minute intervals a few times through the day. You can also keep your head elevated at night by sleeping with more pillows. In most cases the majority of swelling subsides within 3 days.

Treatments for the area surrounding the lips
Increasing lip volume and changing the lip shape, is not the only procedure offered at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic targeted towards enhancing the lips and mouth area.
- “smile lines”- also referred to as Nasolabial Folds, these are facial wrinkles located on either side of the mouth that are created from the movement of smiling. The same dermal filler that is used on the lips can also be injected to smooth and fill in these lines
- laser hair removal for both men and women can effectively remove hair on the skin above the upper lip and the full area around the mouth
For darkening of the skin (hyperpigmentation), which can be rather common above the upper lip area, Medlight laser treatments or IPL (photo facial) procedures can be targeted towards this pigment, and gradually lighten the area. Back to the top
It is critical to understand why the lip’s placement on the face is so critical to its overall balance, shape and proportion. It may seem a little mathematical, but beauty experts agree that the lips should form a line parallel to the imaginary line between the pupils of the eyes.
Understanding the proper qualities for your lips cannot be overemphasized. Fullness is only one aspect you’ll need to consider. Shape and contour are also considerations that add to optimal esthetics. While the lips should be full and well defined, the line between the red portion of the lip and the white of the skin surrounding it should not be blunted.

Lip Fillers Q & A
When do I see the result from lip filler?
You will notice the difference instantaneously! Your lips will be plump and voluminous as soon as the treatment is done. There is some swelling, as noted above, so the final results take up to 2 weeks to see once all the swelling has decreased.1
Can I use more than one syringe of filler in my lips?
Yes you are able to use more than one syringe of filler for your treatment. Some patients may want to wait in between having more than one syringe injected, or may opt to have them in the same appointment/ treatmen
How long do the results last?
Results last based on the product injected. For a soft tissue filler that has hyaluronic acid, the average span is 6 months to one year. Based on the preference of the patient, repeat injections can be done before this period if desired.
Does lip augmentation with a dermal filler hurt?
There will be a bit of discomfort during the procedure, as the lips can be sensitive. A topical numbing agent is applied prior to help with the initial poke of the needle. Most of the products we use at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic have numbing agents contained within the product, to help alleviate pain. After the injection the lips may be a bit tender, but an over the counter pain medication can be taken if you find it bothersome.
Is there anything I can do to prepare for my lip augmentation?
Avoiding alcohol, ASA (Aspirin) products and smoking one week before will help reduce swelling and the chance of you forming a bruise. If you form a bruise, makeup can easily cover it up.
Are there any risks to lip augmentation?
Depending on the type of lip augmentation that you have done will determine the type of complications. However usually with a hyaluronic acid based filler, augmenting the lips has minimal risks, but does include asymmetry and bump formation. Infection and scarring are also possible complications.
What are the side effects to lip fillers?
Lip filler side effects that are common include, bruising, swelling and some discomfort. These usually last a few days, but are gone within one week in most cases. Other side effects which can be less common include severe itching, redness and a lot of swelling which can be an indication of an allergic reaction, depending on the type of lip filler used.
Can men have lip augmentation done?
Absolutely! Both men and women can have their lips augmented. A good candidate is someone who is bothered by thin or asymmetrical lips.
