In under 30 minutes, our Injectable Fillers Specialist will minimize and eliminate the signs of aging, using dermal fillers which is the most advanced method in non-invasive cosmetic/plastic surgery today!

A dermal filler is a non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment that is intended to correct skin creases, wrinkles and folds associated with aging as well as add volume and definition to enhance other facial features.Soft tissue fillers, dermal fillers and injectable fillers are names that can be used interchangeably. Dermal fillers are injectable fillers, and vice versa. In fact, they're just two ways of saying the same thing in the cosmetic/plastic surgery industry- a medical product that is injected into the skin to add volume, alter contours and achieve a more youthful appearance.

Types of Dermal Fillers

There are many types of dermal and injectable fillers available in North America. . There are two main types; permanent and temporary.

  • Permanent Fillers - Many permanent fillers are not available in Canada. These products are not absorbed by the body, which is why they are much more long lasting. Some common permanent dermal fillers include Sculptra, Artecoll /ArteFill, Silicone, and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) .
  • Temporary - These fillers will not last forever but also it is unpredictable to determine how long it will last in each patient. Temporary fillers are usually hyaluronic acid based. Hyaluronic acid fillers naturally breakdown over time so the results will fade, lasting up to fifteen months. JUVEDERM®, Restylane®, Teosyal®, Esthélis and Perlane® are some examples.

At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic we only use temporary dermal fillers that are made of hyaluronic acid gel, to ensure our patients receive the most natural, smooth, youthful and safest results  possible!

Common Injection Areas

Cheeks, Jawline and Chin Area: Pockets of fat evenly distributed in the face and supple skin create a smooth facial contour. However, age causes fat pockets to disintegrate and the skin to lose its suppleness, leaving the face sunken and gaunt with lax skin drooping past the jawline. Injectable fillers can add volume to the cheeks and chin area to replace lost volume, eliminating jowls and sunken areas. They may also be used to correct marionette lines (creases that extend from the corners of the mouth downward toward the chin).

Forehead Wrinkles: Whether dynamic or non-dynamic, these permanent horizontal creases on the forehead and permanent vertical frown lines can be filled out so that the forehead reclaims a smoother and more youthful appearance.

Nasolabial Folds: When you smile, creases form at the corners of the mouth, extending upward to the outer edges of the nose. Known as nasolabial folds, these deep creases can be quite prominent. Using a product such as JUVEDERM® can fill out the fold, making it less pronounced without sacrificing the beauty of your natural smile.

Lips: Injectable fillers are an excellent way to boost the volume of the lips. Non-surgical lip augmentation can reclaim volume lost due to aging, fill out vertical lines that run upwards toward the nose (aka smoker's wrinkles) and achieve a more aesthetically pleasing lip contour.

Nose: Also referred to as a non-surgical nose job, dermal fillers can camouflage and bumps or unevenness on the nose. It will not make the nose smaller in size, but it will allow for a more projection and can hide bumps on the bridge of the nose.

Scars including Acne Scarring: If you suffer from acne scarring injectable fillers may be of help as they can “fill in” depressions and smooth out the texture of your skin. Surgical scars that are sunken and depressed can also be filled with dermal fillers.

Under Eyes: Sunken and dark under eyes can make you look tired, even when you feel full of energy. Fillers can camouflage dark under circles which can be created by fat loss in the under-eye area.

Dermal Filler Procedure at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic

Dermal Filler Procedure at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic

Performed within the accredited facility of Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, your dermal filler treatment will take less than 30 minutes. After discussing in the mirror as to what areas are bothersome, and the type of result you want to achieve, the injection process will begin.

To prevent discomfort, a numbing cream can be applied to the treatment area. This will take several minutes to take effect. Soon after, the filler is injected through a fine needle into the dermal layer of your skin. After regular intervals of injection your injectionist will rub the treatment area until the desired degree of effect is achieved. The newly injected hyaluronic acid will begin to bind water molecules to increase volume below the skin.

There will be a bit of redness in the area and you may or may not have a tiny bit of bleeding. This will go away within the hour. Swelling will occur, but majority of it will be gone within 3 days. You are able to return to your daily routine, and our injectionist will call you within the week to make sure you are loving the results!

What if I don’t like the results?

This is the beauty of why we use non-permanent fillers! If for instance you had an injection elsewhere at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic and you find the results to be unsatisfactory- either too much volume or too uneven (lumpy) then a simple injection can reduce and smooth out the effects. By injecting a substance called hyaluronidase, fillers that are comprised of hyaluronic acid can be dissolved.

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. It is advised to wait at least 2 weeks since your injection to make sure that all the swelling has subsided. It takes an experienced injector such as Lori, as in some cases hyaluronic acid in your own natural tissue may be dissolved as well. Pricing is complimentary if your dermal filler injection was done at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, however if performed by an outside injectionist, hyaluronidase injection starts from $100.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in connective tissue. It can be found most commonly in your joints, skin and tendons. This acid functions to absorb and bind water molecules to achieve volume in the face. Hyaluronic acid fillers achieve a more youthful appearance by replacing preexistent hyaluronic acid that has broken down over time with an injected hyaluronic acid filler to restore volume in the skin.

Hyaluronic acid injections at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic are found as non-animal derived. Since Hyaluronic acid is a substance that it already present in our bodies, it is very rare to have an allergic reaction to the product in the form of a dermal filler. Therefore hyaluronic acid side effects are very minimal, but can include swelling, slight bruising and mild redness. In most cases the hyaluronic acid that makes up a dermal filler is in a gel consistency that is crossed linked to allow for it to fill and hold structure. The amount of hyaluronic acid will vary between products.

BOTOX® vs Fillers- what is the difference?

BOTOX® vs Fillers- what is the difference?

BOTOX COSMETIC® is a muscle relaxant that will help to smooth out fine lines associated with aging in the upper half of the face. Dermal fillers are used to create contours, fill in deep wrinkles and depressions, as well as enhance facial features.

BOTOX COSMETIC® and fillers can be used in the same treatment, all depending on the type of results that you want to achieve. It is best to communicate to your injectionist on what bothers you the most and what type of results you are looking for.

injectable Fillers Q & A

  • When do I see the results?

The results are immediate and you will notice volume in the treated area right away. Swelling does interfere a bit with the results at first. It takes a full 2 weeks see the final results, of when the swelling disappears, but usually after 3 days you can have a more realistic result when the majority of swelling goes down.

  • Swelling? How much will I have?

Swelling is caused by 2 things: 1) the trauma from the needle , and 2) the high affinity that hyaluronic acid fillers have for water. The treated area will swell, however this will vary from patient to patient and also depends on what area of the face was injected; usually the lips swell the most. Icing the area and keeping your head elevated will help to reduce swelling.

  • Is there a recovery time?

Recovery time is quick and you may continue regular activities right after the procedure is complete.

  • When is the best time to inject a filler?

We suggest that if you have a major social engagement, or special event coming up that it is not best to have an injection the day before. Since there may be some swelling and possible bruising, it is best to wait either after the event or have the injection several days before.

  • Will I look like I “had work done”?

The goal of dermal fillers is to subtly enhance your beauty as well reduce the signs of aging. The best results are those that harmonize your facial features and balance out volume Some patients may want more volume than others. It is best to describe in detail the look and cosmetic result that you want to your injector.

  • What are the benefits of hyaluronic acid fillers, compared to permanent fillers?

Since hyaluronic acid fillers are comprised of a substance that is naturally already occurring almost everything living thing, there is a very low chance of having an adverse reaction or allergy to the product. Permanent fillers are often completely man-made products that are not smooth and rather lumpy, so the results over time with permanent fillers can also be lumpy and bumpy.

  • What are some side effects to injectable fillers?

Potential side effects include mild bruising, redness, swelling, tenderness and itching. There may also be some mild discomfort around the area treated. However, a great deal can depend upon the individual's condition.
