Nd: YAG (Nd: Y3Al5O12) stands for neodymium, a rare metal of the earth that is used for doping, and yttrium aluminium garnet, a synthetic crystalline. It is a solid state laser, which means that the active laser medium is a solid, and was developed in the 1960s. The solid used as the active laser medium within the device is the combination of the two substances, neodymium and yttrium aluminium garnet. Selective photothermolysis is a fairly new discovery. It is the method by which hair, or tissue, is destroyed or damaged by a specified amount of light energy.
