BOTOX® itself is a trade name for Clostridium botulinum toxin type A neurotoxin complex, there are other manufactures of botulinum toxin type A on the market available for cosmetic and medical use.
What distinguishes them are their laboratory preparations, ie- purification processes. While still differences, they are very subtle and still work through the same mechanism of action. They all help to block the release of the neurotransmitter (acetylcholine) to interfere with nerve signalling and prevent muscle contraction, and therefore smooth out wrinkles.
There are other strands of Botulinum Toxin Type A on the market. Allergan which is the manufacturer and producer of BOTOX® are currently the dominant industry leaders for cosmetic neuromuscular toxin. Allergan’s units are different then with dealing with other botulinum toxin preparations and can not be used interchangeably. The brand of BOTOX® is very well known and worldly recognized Just as Kleenex is a brand of tissue paper, the same holds true for BOTOX®. To distinguish properly the type, it can also be referred to as onabotulinumtoxinA.
Other neurotoxins include:
Referred to as abobotulinumtoxinA, Dysport® is intended to temporarily improve the appearance moderate to severe frown lines. It has a different dosing than BOTOX® and some patients may find this beneficial as it has a quicker onset than other neurotoxins.
Also referred by incobotulinumtoxinA, XEOMIN® has been known as a “naked” neurotoxin. It goes through a purification process to remove some of the surface complexing proteins. These “protecting proteins” surround the neurotoxins most active molecules, which some claim to be either a positive or negative aspect of the product. Some feel that there is less of a chance to gaining resistance towards XEOMIN® as well as a lower chance of an allergic reaction occurring since there are less additives in it.
MYOBLOC® / NeuroBloc®
MYOBLOC® and NeuroBloc® are the same, however have different names; In North America it is marked under MYOBLOC® (rimabotulinumtoxinB) and NeuroBloc® in Europe. It is currently the only non “A” type of botulinum toxin, as it is botulinum toxin type B. Currently it is intended for non aesthetic purposes and its cosmetic function is still being studied.
There have been over 2100 peer reviewed publication on BOTOX®, it is one of the most researched and brand recognized drugs on the world which is one of the reasons why at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic we use the one and only BOTOX®.
