What is
Vaginoplasty?

Childbirth puts a lot of stress on the vagina, and many women experience a weakening of their vaginal muscles after having children. In addition, just like any other muscle in the body, the vaginal canal can weaken with age. This loosening of the vaginal muscles can lead to a decrease in sexual gratification.

Vaginoplasty, also frequently called vaginal rejuvenation, is a surgical procedure that helps to tighten vaginal muscles, and repair soft tissues that may have been damaged during childbirth, or other types of injury.

What
Vaginoplasty
Can Do For You?

Whether due to childbirth or age, a weakening of the vaginal canal can have a detrimental effect on a woman’s sex life. Part of the enjoyment both partners feel during sexual intercourse is due to the friction created by penetration and movement against the vaginal walls. If the vaginal muscles are lax, friction is diminished, which also diminishes sexual gratification. This can lead to decreased sexual fulfillment, which can have a negative effect on an intimate relationship.

A vaginoplasty can help by addressing the root cause of this lack of gratification—the weakened vaginal muscles. By repairing the soft tissues of the vagina, and tightening the muscles along the canal, the diameter of the vagina can be reduced. This, in turn, can increase friction during intercourse, leading to a higher level of sexual gratification for both partners.

Vaginoplasty does not address a prolapsed uterus. However, the plastic surgeon who performs vaginoplasty at our clinic, Dr. Dimitrios Giannoulias, is a board-certified OBGYN doctor. If you also suffer from a prolapsed uterus, he may be able to address it during your vaginoplasty, depending on the severity of the prolapse. Discuss it with him during your pre-surgical consultation.

Cost of
Vaginoplasty?

Vaginal rejuvenation costs $5,700 plus tax. This includes general anesthesia.

Having associated procedures performed simultaneously can increase the overall cost of your surgery, but keep it lower than if the procedures were performed separately.

What Factors Can Affect
Vaginoplasty Cost?

Combination of Procedures

If you have more than one procedure performed during the same surgery, we can often provide a price adjustment. You may be paying for two procedures, but you’ll only be paying once for other necessities such as anesthesia and surgical tools.
Other procedures that can be combined with vaginoplasty include:

Secondary Surgery

Sadly, some of our clients come to us requesting corrections after a procedure has gone wrong somewhere else. The fee of the secondary surgery depends on the nature of the damage and how complicated the repair is. While we unfortunately cannot do this free of cost, we do our best to make it affordable.

Gynecological Specialist Surgeons

The surgeons on our staff are not just “general” cosmetic surgeons. We seek doctors who specialize in the areas that correspond to the procedures and services we provide, and we’re proud to have some of the best cosmetic surgeons in Toronto right here at TCC. Our rates correspond to the high level of quality we offer, and we’re confident you’ll agree the results you’ll see are worthwhile.

Top-of-the-Line Tools and Equipment

In addition to making sure our operating suites are both comfortable and functional, we take great pride in ensuring that our doctors and surgical staff have the best tools and equipment available to them. We upgrade our equipment on a regular basis, and spare no expense in this regard.

How is Vaginoplasty
Performed?

First, you will either be given spinal anesthetic, or put under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will use a laser to make incisions in the vaginal walls, and then suture the tissues together with dissolving stitches, thereby tightening the vaginal canal. Any resulting excess skin is then removed. Because this all takes place inside the vagina, there is usually no visible scarring.

Once surgery is complete, you'll spend some time in our recovery room where our surgical staff will monitor you to ensure you wake up fully and are not experiencing any negative side effects.

Vaginoplasty normally takes about an hour to complete, but this time period may be extended if you choose to have other procedures done simultaneously. Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day.

Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation®

Traditionally, vaginal rejuvenation was performed with a scalpel. However, all vaginoplasty procedures at TCC are performed using Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® (LVR®). This is a proprietary procedure that uses specialized laser techniques to minimize or eliminate blood loss, and reduce the length of recovery.

Our gynecological cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Dimitrios Giannoulias, is the first doctor in Ontario to be certified by the Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Institute of America in order to offer LVR® exclusively to our patients.

Vaginoplasty Risks and Recovery

Like any surgery, vaginoplasty comes with a few risks and complications, including bleeding, infection, and reaction to anesthesia. Common side effects include pain, discomfort, and swelling, but these should be less pronounced with Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation®. Following your doctor's instructions carefully will also help minimize complications and side effects.

You'll need anywhere from a couple of days to one week off from work immediately following vaginal rejuvenation surgery. Full recovery from will take six to eight weeks, depending on your body and the extent of treatment. You should avoid strenuous activity and exercise during this time, and must definitely avoid sexual intercourse until you are fully healed. Otherwise, you run the risk of reopening the incisions, and needing follow-up surgery to close them again.

Once you're fully healed, you and your partner will be able to feel the results. Both of you will experience renewed sexual pleasure and dramatic increase in sensation from intercourse, achieving a level of sexual gratification that was missing before., patients return to their usual schedules in a few days.

Perineoplasty

As a result of tearing or poorly performed episiotomies during childbirth, the muscles of the perineum (the area between the vagina and the anus) can become excessively stretched or separated, and the skin can even be scarred.

This can lead to a variety of problems, including itching and an inability to enjoy sexual stimulation. Worse, it may inhibit the contraction of the vaginal muscles during intercourse, a necessary function in order to achieve orgasm. Aside from these problems, some women may also be embarrassed by bulging scars or excessive skin in this area.

Perineoplasty can correct all of these issues.

During the procedure, the surgeon will reopen the scarred tissue, remove any excess skin if necessary, and then suture the area closed in a manner that will ensure correct healing. Perineoplasty can be performed at the same time as a vaginoplasty. If this is a concern for you, discuss it with your doctor during your pre-surgical consultation.

Question & Answer

  • What are the benefits of vaginal rejuvenation?

The primary benefit is restored or increased sexual gratification.

  • Who cannot undergo vaginoplasty?

Responsible surgeons will not perform vaginoplasty on women who are pregnant. However, the surgery may be recommended for women who have recovered from childbirth, and do not plan on having more children.

  • How soon after giving birth can I have a vaginoplasty?

Your body goes through a tremendous change during pregnancy and delivery. It is generally recommended that women wait at least 1-2 months before coming for an examination to determine if they are good candidate for this procedure.

  • How long do I have to wait to have sex after a vaginoplasty?

We recommend you wait at least one to two months after childbirth before coming for an examination to determine whether you’re a good candidate for this procedure.

  • How long do I have to wait to have sex after a vaginoplasty?

Your doctor will tell you how long to wait depending on your specific circumstances and the extent of your procedure, but generally you can resume gentle vaginal intercourse after four to six weeks.

  • How far up can a vaginoplasty go?

This procedure can tighten the vaginal muscles all the way up to the cervix. It is important during your consultation to be specific about what kind of results you want.

  • Can I get a vaginoplasty even if I haven’t had children?

Typically, this procedure is recommended for women who have had at least one natural childbirth. Sometimes, it can be suitable for women who naturally have a wider vaginal cavity. Discuss this with your doctor during your consultation.

  • Will there be noticeable scars?

No. As with any type of incision, scar tissue will heal the surgical site. However, in the case of a vaginoplasty, scars will be barely noticeable, and will not be visible from outside the body.

  • When will I feel results?

The final results of your vaginal rejuvenation will appear about four to six weeks after surgery. By this time, all swelling should have subsided.
