Primary and Secondary Rhinoplasty
Individuals who wish to undergo rhinoplasty at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic are always examined by the physician selected to perform the procedure in a preoperative consultation. During the consultative process, individuals are requested to inform their physician of past surgeries performed and may even be asked to reveal such information during the initial consultation with the patient consultant.
All invasive cosmetic surgical procedures require an overview of the individual's surgical history to ensure that the procedure desired is suitable. In the case of rhinoplasty, it is particularly important to describe any previous surgery performed on the nose, as well as any trauma that has been experienced in the area. This will help determine whether primary or secondary/revision rhinoplasty should be performed.
Primary Rhinoplasty
Primary rhinoplasty is when no surgery has been performed on the nose before and trauma has not affected the area. An alteration of the existing structure of the nose is performed to achieve the desirable results.
Secondary/Revision Rhinoplasty
If the nose has been operated on before or trauma has been experienced, the scheduled rhinoplasty is termed secondary or revision. This type of nose job is designed to fix any problems that result from trauma or a previous nose job, and is quite a common cosmetic surgical procedure.
In most cases, problems arising from a previous nose job are major, and for this reason, secondary rhinoplasty is generally considered to be more difficult than primary rhinoplasty. This may be to correct aesthetic problems such as pinched nostrils, an overly sharpened tip, or a nose that is not harmoniously balanced with the rest of the face.
In secondary rhinoplasty, the physician performing surgery may have to alter the procedure to achieve the desirable results, using different techniques and methods from what would have been used during primary rhinoplasty.
