Tell me more about rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty is the technical name for "nose job" or "nose surgery".
The cosmetic surgery procedure, rhinoplasty, has been designed to improve the appearance of the nose to create a more balanced appearance with the rest of the face. It can also improve breathing and boost self confidence and self esteem.
Rhinoplasty can widen or narrow the nostrils, even out a bump on the bridge or tip, and make the size of the nose appear smaller. It can also redefine the contour. Whatever the case, the ultimate goal of a nose job is to create a nose that is balanced with the rest of the face.
Who is a good candidate?
A good candidate for rhinoplasty is one that has realistic expectations of the procedure, is in relatively good mental and physical health, and would like to improve the appearance of their nose. Full growth should also be achieved prior to surgery.
What's the process?
If you're interested in getting rhinoplasty and have decided to do so of your own accord, the first step is to call Toronto Cosmetic Clinic at 416-221-5554 to book your complimentary consultation. A medical professional will address all of your concerns and questions, describe the procedure, and determine whether rhinoplasty is suitable for you. Alternative treatments may be discussed, such as injectable fillers.
Once it is determined that rhinoplasty is suitable for you, you will be asked to undergo any necessary tests, such as a blood test to check hemoglobin counts. Then, one or more preoperative consultations with the physician to perform the procedure are scheduled, followed by the actual surgery.
A series of follow up appointments will be scheduled after surgery to monitor recovery.
Tell me more about the procedure.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis at the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic surgical centre. General anesthesia is administered during this cosmetic surgery procedure.
The techniques performed during an individual's procedure depend on the type of correction desired. In most cases, a nose job entails one or more incisions, placed in discreet location(s), so that excess skin may be removed. It can also involve altering or removing cartilage, or modifying the bone structure through an incision.
How long is recovery?
Recovery depends on the extent of correction. Patients generally return to work/school within one to two weeks, while strenuous activity that raises blood pressure should be avoided for up to three weeks. While the nose heals, it should not be touched or rubbed.
Your physician may also provide directions on how to clean your nose during recovery to prevent infection. Expect to sleep on your back in the weeks following rhinoplasty, with your head slightly elevated.
Activities that involve bodily contact, such as football or other sports, are to be avoided until full recovery is completed. This may take up to several months. Swelling may last up to a year.
When do the results appear?
Though a change is immediately apparent following surgery, bandages, swelling and bruising may "hide" results. The true results from rhinoplasty appear in the months following surgery. Complete recovery from swelling may take up to a year, however patients usually notice improvement earlier.
How long do the results last?
Rhinoplasty permanently alters the shape/size of a patient's nose. Results will last permanently, though they may be affected by the natural signs of aging.
What are the risks of rhinoplasty?
Some negative side effects of rhinoplasty include bruising, swelling and pain. All of these are considered temporary. Permanent risks include tiny burst blood vessels in the nose and scarring.
Some more serious risks are those related to any surgical procedure, such as bleeding, infection and complications arising from the administration of anesthesia.
