General Information about Melasma

At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, the MedLite® C6 Laser is used to treat melasma.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a common form of hyperpigmentation distinguishable by its appearance as blotches of dark colouring on the skin. These blotches do not have a uniform shape or a regular border. Though the typical colour of melasma tends to be from light to dark brown, it can also be a shade of grey. Whatever the colour, it is always a different shade than the surrounding normal skin colour.

Where it Appears

Melasma appears on the face, in the areas where the skin is most often exposed to the sun. These include the forehead, cheeks, chin/jawline, nose and upper lips. It does have a symmetrical appearance when spread across the cheeks, forehead or nose.

Most instances of melasma occur in women over the age of 20.

All shades of skin can be afflicted, but generally, the condition is more prominent in women of darker skin tones. It is not uncommon for women of lighter skin to have melasma that is, fortunately, barely noticeable.

While melasma is most common in females, some men of darker skin can also be afflicted.

Melasma and Chloasma

In some cases, melasma is referred to as chloasma. Chloasma is a form of melasma that appears during pregnancy and may disappear after childbirth or last longer. As a result, chloasma is also known as the "mask of pregnancy".

Causes of Melasma and Chloasma

Though the cause is wholly unknown, the appearance of melasma and chloasma is believed to be due to an excess of melanin production in the skin. This excess production can be a result of several factors, most specifically hormones (i.e. estrogen and progesterone), genetics, malnutrition, sun exposure, and certain medications. Because sun exposure worsens the condition, it is highly recommended that those who are unhappy with this skin discolouration protect the afflicted areas with a good sunblock.

Strangely, in several cases, chloasma or melasma may disappear after a while (i.e. in a few months).
