Are the results from a breast lift permanent?
Any woman who is unhappy with the aesthetic appearance of their breasts because they sag, droop or lack firmness.
Ideal candidates for mastopexy include women who have realistic expectations of the procedure and are both relatively physically and mentally healthy. It is recommended that women wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding, and do no expect to rapidly lose weight, before undergoing the procedure. Both may have an adverse effect on results stemming from mastopexy.
A breast lift is designed to improve firmness of the breasts. It can also improve their fullness. Some may believe that exercise and toning exercises may help, but they are not truly effective in achieving what mastopexy can since it is predominately lax skin, rather than muscle, that creates ptosis (sagging). As a result, we find that many women undergo a breastlift to improve their overall physical contour, thereby boosting their self esteem and confidence.
A breast lift is not designed to increase the size of the breasts. Though they may increase their fullness, they will not increase their size. Breast augmentation is designed for this purpose.
However, a breast lift may be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation.
This depends. Because skin is removed during the breast lift procedure, your surgeon may eliminate skin that is affected by stretch marks. However, if stretch marks are in areas where the removal of skin is not beneficial for the procedure, then they will not be removed.
Most patients find that some of the stretch marks that appear near the areola or on the lower part of the breast are generally eliminated because of the techniques involved during surgery.
If you are concerned with stretch marks, there are other ways to eliminate their appearance. You may want to consider Laser Skin Tightening or Laser Skin Resurfacing.
The technique used during surgery depend on the amount of skin removed, the extent of correction and the individual. Breast lift techniques are essentially defined by the types of incision made.
If sagging is severe, then a full breast lift is most likely required. Known as the Wise Pattern, an incision is made around the areola, with another straight down from the middle of the lower portion of the areola to the inframammary fold (where the breast meets the body). Another incision is then made in the natural curve of the inframammary fold joining the vertical incision. The scar which results from these incisions is in the shape of an anchor.
The Lollipop Incision is like the Wise Pattern, but lacks the incision made in the inframammary fold (or it may be very short).
Modified mastopexy is typically for women with smaller breasts or who do not require such extensive correction. A common technique used is the Doughnut Incision. Two parallel incisions are made around the areola to remove excess skin, then the remaining skin is reattached to the areola to form a single scar. When performed an experienced physician, this scar is barely noticeable.
An attractive breast is generally achieved by a balance between breast volume and the amount of breast skin that maintains that volume. If there is too much visible breast skin to maintain the volume, then the breast appears to sag. The amount of skin to be removed is determined by achieving an appealing balance between volume and surface area.
General anesthesia is used most often, however your options will be presented to you prior to the procedure.
This depends on the type of incision and the individual. Generally, it takes anywhere from 1.5 to 3.5 hours.
Immediately following surgery, gauze dressing is applied to the treated area and a supportive garment is worn. Similar to most other surgical procedures, some amount of bruising, soreness and swelling does occur, but will subside within a few days. To ease discomfort, medication can be prescribed. If dissolvable sutures are not used, they are removed within two weeks. Scars resulting from the incisions tend to fade into a pale thin line when treated according to your surgeon's directions.
Massaging exercises, as recommended by your cosmetic surgeon, may help with healing.
Yes. However, factors such as age, pregnancy, and massive fluctuations in weight may influence results from a breast lift.
