| Tumescent Liposuction
Liposuction is by far, the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in North America. Men and women across the continent are turning to liopsuction to improve their body contour to achieve a level of self esteem and confidence they deserve.
Liposuction can be performed in a variety of ways, differentiated by the amount of fluid used during the procedure; there is dry, semiwet, and wet. Another technique popular in cosmetic surgery is tumescent liposuction. Our physicians specialize in tumescent liposuction at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic.
The Invention of Tumescent Liposuction
The tumescent technique was devised by Dr. Jeffrey A. Klein, an American dermatologist. Up until 1985, liposuction was only performed using general anesthesia. Local anesthesia was used only if a very small amount of fat was removed. Finding this questionable, Dr. Klein explored the possibilities of using local anesthesia for any amount of fat removal, creating the tumescent technique, popular in Toronto.
After years of research and practical experience, pure tumescent liposuction has been deemed as one of the safest methods of liposuction. Complications are minimal, linked more to patients who undergo another surgical procedure simultaneously or have large volumes of fat removed.
The Tumescent Technique
Tumescent liposuction is a technique that has been used for a number of decades. Involving large amounts of a highly diluted anesthesia (typically lidocaine with epinephrine, and intravenous fluid) injected into the subcutaneous fat of the target area to make it firm and swollen. Little stinging pain is felt from the administration of the local anesthesia due to the addition of sodium bicarbonate. Epinephrine contracts the blood vessels in the area, therefore blood loss is considerably less.
The procedure involves utilizing microcannulae in order to remove subcutaneous fat in specific areas, which are far smaller than cannulae used in other liposuction techniques. Within the tumesced fat, the microcannulae can glide gently and smoothly for its removal. This may take longer than using a larger cannula, but reduces the amount of trauma to the treated area and can provide more successful results.
Local anesthesia provides longer relief to the treated area, often for several hours after the surgical procedure, without the need for medication and the risks related to general anesthesia. In fact, it can last up to 24 hours! Pain during and following liposuction at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic is minimized.
Results normally appear faster than other forms of liposuction procedures. |
