What to Expect following the Liposuction Procedure

There will be some discomfort and pain following the liposuction procedure. The anesthesia used, if it is local, will last for a few hours (up to 24 hours) after the liposuction procedure at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic. Medication prescribed by your cosmetic surgeon or doctor can also help to ease any discomfort, but usually Tylenol will suffice.
If a general anesthesia is used, a narcotic analgesia may be required to relieve discomfort and pain. Side effects of these pain relievers and sedatives may contribute to additional discomfort following liposuction, including nausea and chills.
General discomfort is at its worst in the first couple of days following the liposuction procedure. For about 2 weeks, a soreness in the muscles and the skin will exist, eventually disappearing. The feeling may be similar to the day after a rigorous workout or sunburn. However, this time frame may be longer if more areas are treated in a single liposuction procedure since the body will require more time to heal.
Expect some swelling generally in and around the treated area from liposuction solution becoming trapped underneath the skin. This solution, tinged with red blood cells and minimal amounts of fatty tissue which escaped the liposuction process, causes inflammation. Swelling and pain are a result of this inflammation. However, advancements in liposuction methods have now recommended that leaving small incision sites open and simply covering them with absorptive pads instead facilitates rapid drainage of any trapped liposuction solution. Cosmetic surgeons at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic choose this technique, allowing patients to experience swelling that subsides faster and dramatically than when all incisions are closed. Swelling can also be controlled by wearing specially designed compression garments that are elasticized to promote drainage, worn immediately following the liposuction procedure. Patients are also encouraged to occasionally walk around to improve blood circulation in the treated area and prevent blood clotting.
Patients undergoing a Toronto tumescent liposuction procedure will be able to return sooner to normal activity than patients undergoing other types of liposuction procedures. This is due to less swelling, pain and inflammation.
Specific steps on how to care for areas treated with liposuction will be outlined by your cosmetic surgeon.
Most cosmetic surgeons recommend that when patients return to their exercise routine, they start off slowly to avoid shocking the body. Regular exercise will maintain the results of liposuction at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic. Patients can resume with sexual activity anytime, as long as it does not cause additional soreness and pain in the treated areas.
