Laser Cosmetic Surgery For the Body
There are several different areas where cosmetic laser surgery has found applications, but there have been especially effective results in liposuction and labioplasty.
Liposuction
The whole process of liposuction is at least partially redefined with the addition of laser technology. Whereas traditional forms of liposuction simply suck up pieces of unwanted fat that have been broken up by the cannula, laser assisted forms of liposuction use laser energy to disrupt unwanted fat cells using a thermal and photo disruptive action. This melts unwanted fat, making removal easier. Combined with the dual process of bulk thermal heating and the coagulation of surrounding tissues, recovery periods are shortened and the degree of bleeding and swelling is lessened.
Types of Lasers in Liposuction
The Erchonia Neira 4L Laser is approved for use in both the United States and Canada. During liposuction surgery, the laser passes over the affected area in a sweeping motion for six to twelve minutes so that fat, up to six inches under the skin, can be ‘liquefied’ for easy removal. This laser is low-level, having no no thermal effect on the tissues treated. Any pain and inflammation that patients experience after surgery is lessened dramatically, making the recovery shorter. This technology also affords better body contouring in many cases.
Smartlipo is another form of laser device used during the liposuction procedure. This technique uses an Nd: YAG laser that combines a thin micron fibre and high repetition rate. Laser energy is delivered directly to the unwanted fat.
Labioplasty
Childbirth, pregnancy or other factors may cause the labia of the female genitalia to become saggy, distorted or even enlarged. Labioplasty involves altering the external structures of the genitalia, generally requiring an incision to remove excess tissue. The incision may be made with a scalpel or surgical scissors. However, in the case of laser labioplasty, a laser is used instead to reshape or resize the labia. Using a laser may reduce the amount of bleeding during surgery as it cauterizes blood vessels. It can also shorten the length of surgery.
