The Causes of Cellulite

Free Radicals

As more and more research is done on the subject of cellulite, there are always new developments that arise regarding the deformation of these connective tissues. Caused by bad circulation and improper drainage of the lymph nodes, the condition usually starts in a predictable way: frequently, a few areas appear discoloured, a few broken veins exist, and there's even a tendency toward easy bruising. These are all indications cellulite is developing.

Recent studies have shown that a set of chemicals that are common in the environment and our bodies are also responsible for the buildup of cellulite. Called free radicals, they have been flagged as the main agents that can damage our circulatory system which results in the formation of cellulite. They are partially responsible for bolstering our immune systems, however they also attack our cell walls and weaken our DNA. With time they also cause some of the most lethal diseases we know, like cancer.

Free radicals originate from sources that are both outside and inside our bodies. Some of the more common ones that attack from within and are ultimately responsible for cellulite are the very things that we think are good for us.

Let's take exercise for example. While moderate exercise is always considered healthy, high intensity work outs where you are continually straining can become a source of free radicals within the body. Free radicals can also be released by any kind of infection (including the common cold), emotional stress, lack of sleep, unhealthy diet, and inadequate digestion of food. Generally, all those things that your mother taught you about how to get and stay healthy are the very things that can help you avoid the buildup of cellulite.

Other sources of free radicals that don't originate from inside the body but still contribute to the formation of cellulite include some types of industrial pollution, hormone replacement therapies and birth control pills, as well as excessive consumption of alcohol and coffee.
