Facial Implants for Cheekbones

Cosmetic surgeons are experts at reshaping certain facial features that may be bothering us. Many have adopted a generally standardized approach to determining what needs to be done to make any face more aesthetically pleasing.

While looking at your profile during the consultation process, the cosmetic surgeon will visually divide it into three segments:

Upper Face: Forehead, Brow, Upper eyelids
Mid-Level Face: Lower Eyelids, Cheeks, Nose, Ears
Lower Face: Mouth, Chin, Jaw, Neck

After carefully evaluating the shape and size of each of your features, the surgeon can then determine if one or more areas is out of harmony with the rest. This process may help to measure the amount of correction required.

Cheek Augmentation

Alloplastic surgery in the form of facial implants is becoming an increasingly popular way to enlarge and heighten facial contours. And the procedure isn't new. Surgeons at the turn of the last century used gold and bone to implant under the skin. Thankfully, things have come a long way.

Facial implants for the cheeks raises the appearance of the cheekbones to give them a forward projection which can also improve the look of the lower eyelid area. It's considered an uncomplicated procedure,  most often done from the inside of the mouth leaving no visible scar. As the desired correction for each patient is unique, implants must be shaped on an individual basis.

The Material of Cheek Facial Implants

Today, cosmetic surgeons incorporate a wide range of materials, such as various forms of carbon-based polymers, metals such as titanium, and even certain kinds of ceramics. All have been deemed safe by Health Canada and the FDA. The most common type of implant currently used in augmentation procedures are the non-carbon based polymers in the form of silicone.

Advantages Over Other Procedures

In fact, there are many distinct advantages in using silicone implants. The material is highly resistant to degradation and presents no known toxicity or allergic reactions.

One alternative to facial implants, fat transfer, requires a subsequent procedure to maintain results after about a year. Injectable fillers such as Juvederm also require touchups, however both alternatives do not require a surgical procedure. The facial implant procedure, which is invasive, generally needs to be performed only once. Because the material is so durable and long lasting, silicone implants can be good for life.

Results

The results of a facial implant surgery tend to be stunning. Even a minor improvement to the face can create a dramatic effect. Cheek contours that are weak or low are gently lifted, and the implants can even rejuvenate the entire face. They may also improve the lower eyelid area, the deep furrows of  laugh lines, and unappealing jowls. Over the last several years, cheek implants have become one of the most popular types of cosmetic surgery.
