Tips for Getting Rid of Stretched Earlobes

While many cultures around the world consider stretched earlobes a symbol of wealth and beauty, for most women in the West they are a cause for concern. The prolonged use of heavy, dangling earrings and frequent telephone usage can cause stretched earlobes.

The only way to get rid of permanently stretched earlobes is through surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures.

Injectable Fillers

Having dermal filler injected in your earlobes is an effective, albeit temporary, way to reduce the appearance of stretched earlobes.Restylane is an injectable filler made of hyaluronic acid that is traditionally used to smooth out facial wrinkles. Restylane can be injected in stretched earlobes to add strength and support while plumping up your earlobes so they return to their natural state. After an injection, there is temporary swelling and redness but local anesthesia is used so the procedure is painless.

The results of the injection last for up to eighteen months and the procedure must be performed by a physician. Each treatment averages under $1000, which may seem costly, but it achieves virtually instant results through noninvasive means.

Earlobe Repair Surgery

If your earlobe is torn, surgical reconstruction is the only viable treatment option. Earlobe repair surgery is done under local anesthesia and consists of stitching up the torn earring hole. Stitches are left in for about two weeks in order to allow the earlobes to heal completely. The ears can then be repierced or the earring holes can be sewn up to leave just enough space for earrings to be introduced. The latter type of procedure eliminates the need of repiercing your earlobes. The problem with getting surgery to repair stretched earlobes is that it does not puff up the appearance of your earlobes like dermal fillers do.

While there is no easy solution for getting rid of stretched earlobes, avoiding heavy, dangling earrings or using earring support patches will go a long way in preventing further damage from taking place. Take other precautions to prevent tears such as wearing clip earrings on some days and not brushing your hair or pulling sweaters over your head while you have earrings on. If you are very concerned about the appearance of your stretched earlobes, remember that there are treatment options available.
