Liposuction

We've all read or heard horror stories about the results of liposuction procedures that have gone wrong - stories of women and men who relied on their surgeons' abilities to remove unwanted fat, all in the hopes of achieving a desirable body contour. Even though they closely followed all of the instructions given to them by their surgeon, they were still disappointed, or downright disgusted, with the results: gross lumps and bumps, horrific bleeding or scarring, bags of floppy skin, and worse-instead-of-better body contours. In many of these stories, it wasn't just a case of bad luck. It was the surgeons who were at fault.

Just like we wouldn't give a baby a knife, an incompetent surgeon can be just as dangerous. They can maximize the possibility of problems to occur, and put a patient's health at risk.

Lumps and Bumps

In many cases, weird lumps and bumps appearing after liposuction are the result of poorly controlled fat removal. During surgery, the cannula used to remove fat in target areas should be gently moved throughout the area. This allows the unwanted fat to be suctioned evenly out. If too much fat is removed in one particular area, it can create a groove that results in an uneven surface. This is one of the primary reasons that contribute to the formation of bumpiness.

Another consideration an experienced cosmetic surgeon will have is whether the individual undergoing surgery plans to gain or lose a great amount of weight following the procedure. This may cause lumps and bumps to appear. While this may not be a direct result of a poorly trained surgeon, this risk should at least be addressed in a preoperative consultation.

Asymmetry

In the event too much fat is removed on one side of the body and not enough is removed on the other, asymmetry will occur. An experienced surgeon will closely monitor the amount of fat removed in order to determine how much should be removed in another area. This is vital in areas such as the love handles, thighs, or upper arms where symmetry is necessary for optimum results.

Baggy Skin

The skin should be examined prior to surgery so that the amount of unwanted fat can be removed without leaving behind unsightly baggy skin. Alternatively, another procedure to remove the excess skin may also be required. However, your cosmetic surgeon should discuss the possibility of remaining excess skin with you during the consultative process. With experience, your surgeon should also be able to assess your situation and provide the most appropriate treatment(s) to achieve your desired results. This may include providing you with a different treatment altogether, such as abdominoplasty.
