Cosmetic surgery among people of Afro-Caribbean descent is on the rise. One of the most prevalent characteristics of these surgeries is a desire for facial balance and harmony, considered a universal element of beauty.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure designed to reshape the nose. It can change the shape of the tip or the bridge of the nose, narrow the span of the nostrils, or even change the angle between the upper lip and nose.

Informally known as a nose job, rhinoplasty is considered one of the most popular of all cosmetic surgical procedures. Perhaps its popularity can be attributed to the increasing numbers of people of Afro-Caribbean descent undergoing the procedure to modify a wider/flatter dorsum (tip of the nose), broader curvature of the nostrils and a depressed nasal front angle. It is common that desired results are not to compromise or change their appearance, but rather achieve a degree of facial harmony which consequently boosts self esteem levels.

A nose job generally takes one to two hours. The skin of the nose is separated from the supporting bone and cartilage during the procedure, then the bone and cartilage are sculpted to a desired shape. When the framework is complete, the skin is draped over the changed nose. The incisions for the surgery can be made from inside the nostrils, but some doctors prefer to cut across the columella, the vertical strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. This is called the 'open' procedure.

Another popular procedure is the buttock lift. A buttock lift improves the appearance of the buttocks by creating a smoother shape and more youthful contour. The procedure may entail the removal of excess skin and fat, or can also involve fat injections or implants.
