Laser Hair Removal with the Lyra Nd:YAG Laser

At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, the laser hair removal procedure is performed with the utilization of the Lyra Nd:YAG lasers (laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation).

Along with the Sciton, these two systems are a couple of the best and safest lasers available on the market today. These devices emit an infrared light that measures 1064 nanometres in wavelength. One nanometre equals one billionth of a metre.

The Nd:YAG Laser emits a light beam slowly, allowing time for the light to become attracted by the melanin in the hair while giving the skin a chance to cool off while doing so. This selective photothermolysis is safe for any skin type, whether tanned or naturally dark to fair and pale. The laser is absorbed more easily by the hair than skin, effectively removing unwanted hair without the adverse side effects many other hair removal devices cause in darker skinned/tanned patients. These common side effects, such as hyperpigmentation (spots of skin that become darker than the surrounding skin) and burns rarely occurs with the Nd:YAG lasers.

For decades, scientists have explored the versatile properties of the Nd: YAG Laser. As one of the most common types of laser, its findings have significantly contributed to the advancement of science and manufacturing. For example, the laser can be used to both cut and weld metal, as well as mark glass at a subsurface level. The Nd: YAG Laser is also commonly used in medicine for the treatment of posterior capsular opacification ("secondary cataract") following cataract surgery.

The Nd: YAG Laser was first used as a device for laser hair removal in Toronto following an accidental discovery by a scientist in the 1970s. After accidentally exposing his arm to the laser, the scientist noticed that the hair was burnt off without any damage to the skin. Even more surprising, the hair never grew back in the exposed area.

This finding triggered further research and testing to confirm the long pulse Nd: YAG Laser as a viable device for laser hair removal in Toronto. The laser is approved by the Food and Drug Administration and Health Canada for hair removal. It is also used for the laser skin resurfacing procedure at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic.
