What is laser hair removal?

It is a method of hair removal that utilizes a laser emitting device. The newest type of laser hair removal device is the Lyra Nd:YAG Laser.

What is the Lyra Nd:YAG Laser?

At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, the Lyra Nd:YAG Laser is one of the pulsed light devices used for the laser hair removal procedure. This hand held device emits an infrared laser that measures 1064 nanometres, and has a cooling window attached to it to protect the skin. For more information, please visit Lyra Nd:YAG Laser.

How does the Lyra Nd:YAG Laser work?

By emitting a light beam slowly, the Lyra Nd:YAG Laser allows time for the light to become attracted by the melanin in the hair while at the same time giving the skin a chance to cool off, preventing any damage to the skin from occurring. The pigment colour in the hair converts the light beam to heat, which then destroys the targeted hair follicles.

Hair that is in its active growth cycle can be targeted.

What is the Sciton Profile?

The Sciton Profile utilizes the Broadband Light Source. Each pulse of light is delivered at a high speed to allow for faster treatments of larger areas. It is ideal for finer lighter hair.

What is The StarLux® 500?

Laser hair removal can also be performed by The StarLux® 500. This laser and pulsed light platform is used for several other indications, but when fitted with the LuxR™ Pulsed Light Handpiece, it is designed to remove unwanted hair of all types. Fair to dark skin can be treated. Discomfort during each exposure to the light energy emitted is minimized with the patented Advanced Contact Cooling™ system.

What areas can be targeted?

Any area, except for near the eyes, can be treated.

Which skin types are most suitable?

The Lyra Nd:YAG Laser used at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic is suitable for the broadest range of skin types. Unlike other types of lasers, the Lyra Nd:YAG Laser does not damage the skin because of its ability to emit light slowly. Whether pale with fair hair or dark skinned with dark hair, this laser hair removal device will work for you. Results may vary.

Is it permanent?

At the moment, laser hair removal is the best option to get rid of unwanted hair.

Who will perform the procedure?

Laser hair removal at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic is performed by a licensed cosmetic surgeon or a laser technician specialist under the direct supervision of a licensed cosmetic surgeon.

Should I expect pain during the procedure?

At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, we make sure our patients do not experience any discomfort during the laser hair removal procedure. Though most patients do not require anything, if any discomfort is felt, a topical anesthetic can be applied.

Before my laser hair removal treatment at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, what should I do to prepare?

You shouldn't pluck, wax, or sugar before your treatment for at least a few weeks. This allows the hair follicle to remain intact for the procedure.

Because the device utilizes light energy, you should avoid suntanning as well. Pigment in the skin may adversely affect the results of a procedure.

Finally, avoid using products that coat the skin in the area to be treated, for example perfume, lotion, or talc.

What should I expect after the treatment?

You should expect your skin to be sensitive to light. Therefore, it is necessary a sunscreen be used to protect the skin from light exposure. In a couple of days, you will also notice that the treated hair will shed, leaving the area virtually hairless.
