Breast Lift Procedure Toronto

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is an elective surgical procedure to lift the breasts, give them a more aesthetically pleasing shape, and/or reduce the size of the areola. Symmetry may also be achieved. It is specifically designed for women who are unhappy about the overall appearance of their breasts, which sag or droop due to pregnancy, nursing, genetics, aging, major weight loss, or other factors. While it is commonly believed that ptosis (sagging) only occurs in women with larger breasts, it is actually a condition that is part of the aging process for all women with any breast size.

While a typical result of a breast lift includes improving the fullness of the breasts, it is not designed to add volume. For women concerned about volume, mastopexy may be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation.

The Consultation

As a condition of the mastopexy procedure, the individual will engage in a preoperative consultation with the physician assigned to perform surgery. Issues such as the individual's general health and well-being, establishing realistic expectations of what can be accomplished with the procedure, and other relevant information will be included.

The Procedure

The breast lift procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic's state-of-the-art surgical centre, or it may require an overnight stay. Typically performed under general anesthesia, the duration of the surgery is anywhere from 1.5 to 3.5 hours. The exact length of surgery depends on the amount of lift desired, the individual, and whether breast augmentation is performed at the same time.

Incisions are made in specific areas outlined prior to the procedure. Breast skin and tissue will be removed. If required, the nipple and areola will be repositioned. For women who experience less sagging or are smaller breasted, your physician may choose to perform another type of breast lift known as "doughnut mastopexy", where circular incisions are made around the areola.

Recovery

Following a breast lift procedure, gauze dressings are applied to the treated area and a supportive garment is worn over them. Similar to most other surgical procedures, some amount of bruising, soreness and swelling does occur, but will subside within a few days. To ease discomfort, medication can be prescribed. If dissolvable sutures are not used, they are removed within two weeks. Scars resulting from the incisions tend to fade into a pale thin line when treated according to your surgeon's directions.

Your physician may advise you to perform massaging exercises to help with healing.

The results of mastopexy generally appear within a few months.

Risks

Like all surgical procedures, a breast lift does have its own set of risks and negative effects. Some risks include bleeding, asymmetry, hematoma and scarring. To reduce the chance of risks occurring, please follow your physician's instructions before and after the procedure.
