Excess lax skin in the abdomen area is a familiar sight for anyone who’s experienced dramatic weight loss or has been pregnant. Often, not even crunches, toning exercises and “magic” lotions or creams can help tighten the skin in the area.

Can’t get rid of the flab? A tummy tuck may be the solution!

Who is a Tummy Tuck for?
A tummy tuck is designed for men and women in relatively good mental and physical shape who have realistic expectations of the procedure and would like to get rid of flaccid hanging skin in the abdomen area. The procedure can also tighten abdominal wall muscles and remove excess fat as well.

Types of Tummy Tuck Procedures
There are two types of tummy tuck procedures: full/complete or partial/mini. The one suitable for you depends on the extent of correction desired. Obviously, a full tummy tuck is designed for those requiring more correction and generally involves a more extensive incision. The belly button may also be repositioned or recreated. A partial one targets the area below the belly button, and requires a smaller incision.

Length of Surgery
Depends on the type of tummy tuck procedure selected. A full tummy tuck may last up to 5 hours, while a mini tummy tuck can last up to 3.

Anesthesia
Usually general.

Side Effects
After the anesthesia wears off, there may be soreness, swelling and bruising. Pain medication is prescribed to alleviate discomfort.

Risks
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications with the tummy tuck procedure. Rare risks include excessive bleeding, bruising and swelling. To minimize the chance of any risk or complication occurring, please follow your cosmetic surgeon’s pre and post operative instructions closely. In addition, be honest and open about your medical history during the consultative process so that your cosmetic surgeon may accurately assess your condition.

Recovery
Following the procedure, dressings are applied to the incision sites and a compression garment is worn. A complete list of aftercare instructions will be given to you. Depending on the type of tummy tuck, most return to sedentary work within a couple of weeks. The full results of the procedure typically appear within 2-3 months.
