Procedure of the Month – Melasma Treatment

If you’ve got irregularly shaped dark blotches on the skin, particularly on the face, then you’ve probably got an excess of pigment (melanin) in the skin that can be worsened by sun exposure. The condition, known as melasma, may sound scary, but don’t worry – it’s not dangerous.
Melasma can, however, ruin your complexion. Because it most often appears on the face, it is easily noticeable and hard to hide. So why live with it? In a few sessions, you can get rid of those blotches and splotches with Melasma Treatment at Toronto Cosmetic Clinc.
Who is Melasma Treatment for?
Melasma treatment is designed for anyone who wants to aesthetically improve their complexion by reducing or eliminating the appearance of melasma. Consultation with a medical professional is required prior to undergoing treatment in order to determine whether this procedure is suitable.
The procedure can also effectively remove freckles, age spots, liver spots, and some birthmarks.
Anesthesia
Topical anesthesia (numbing cream) may be applied prior to the procedure to reduce discomfort.
The Procedure
Melasma treatment is performed by a medical aesthetician with extensive knowledge in dermatology. The MedLite® C6 Laser is used. The device emits a laser beam at a wavelength of 532nm. Directed at the offending hyperpigmentation, the energy is absorbed by the excess melanin to disintegrate it into particles. These particles are then absorbed by the body and eliminated, thereby reducing and eliminating the appearance of the melasma. The procedure is designed not to affect skin unflawed by excess melanin. An improvement can typically be seen after a single session, however optimum results may require a series of sessions determined by the patient consultant and the medical aesthetician performing the procedure.
Each session can take up to an hour, depending on the number of areas treated and their size.
After the Procedure
Because laser energy is used, some discomfort may be felt once the melasma treatment procedure is completed and the numbing cream wears off. Immediately following the procedure, the treated area may appear pale and feel warm. Redness and some swelling may follow. All side effects generally disappear within a few days.
The area should be cleansed gently to reduce the risk of infection and an antibiotic ointment can be applied. Full care instructions will be given to you at the time of the procedure.
The treated skin should be protected from sun exposure until full recovery is made.
