Hymenoplasty, a procedure designed to reconstruct a ruptured hymen, has become one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures for females here at TCC. It is particularly popular amongst women who wish to get married, and believe that an intact hymen is important.

Seeing that the hymen may rupture during activities not sexually-related, for example by gymnastics or other vigorous sports, and even not exist in some women naturally, why do we place so much importance on it?

Well, the hymen has been perceived as a symbol of virginity for centuries, in many countries and traditions around the world. Even in times before science discovered the hymen, the concept of some type of indication of virginity existed.

In English, the term “hymen” got its name from Greek: either from the Greek god, Hymenaios, the god of Marriage, or the word for membrane. It is believed that the success and happiness of a marriage relied heavily on the bride’s hymen being intact.
