Regaining the Power of Speech

Woman Talking

Phyllis Yates, a 73 year old grandmother in the UK, has regained the ability to speak after 14 years of being mute. Her condition, characterized by involuntary spasms of the vocal chord, was diagnosed as laryngeal dystonia. The spasms prevented her from speaking.

Over the course of almost a year,  Phyllis underwent a series of injections with Botox in the muscles surrounding her voice box.  Her treatment was successful.

Botox isn’t just for wrinkles. It is also commonly used to treat spasms such as those affecting the eyes (blepharospasm).
