The Power of AHA

If you know about skincare products and treatments, you know about AHA, the short form for alpha hydroxy acid. AHA is so important because it has been scientifically proven, when used correctly, to improve the quality of skin and rejuvenate it by keeping it soft, supple and evening out the complexion and texture. AHA has even been found to help reverse the effects of sun damage.
But what exactly is AHA, anyway? Well, in skincare, citric, glycolic, lactic and tartaric acids are the most common and popular. They are often used in conjunction with each other.
The Acids of AHA
Citric acid is best known for its antioxidant properties, which help stabilize free radicals in the body that can damage the skin. It also stimulates the production of collagen to strengthen the skin and make it more supple. Most of us get our citric acid from citric fruit, but don’t get this confused with Vitamin C. Vitamin C is ascorbic acid, which is also beneficial for the skin.
For exfoliation, sugar cane-derived gylcolic acid cleanses the skin’s impurities and controls oiliness effectively by its tiny molecules which penetrate the skin easily. It can even reduce fine lines.
Lactic acid can be found in pickles, milk, and cheese. Its main role is to soften the skin by moisturizing and exfoliating.
Used for centuries, tartaric acid is derived from grapes, bananas and wine. It exfoliates the skin and promotes water retention.
