Long beautiful eyelashes

Want long, beautiful eyelashes without mascara?

Allergan, makers of Botox Cosmetic,  have filed a New Drug Application with the FDA for bimatoprost. Bimatoprost, under the trade name of LUMIGAN, is a synthetic prostaglandin analog. Prostaglandin exists in the cells of the body and is a mediator for several physiological functions. Commonly used as a medication to treat glaucoma and ocular hypertension, it has also been found to promote the growth of the eyelashes in its users (a pretty cool side effect, don’t you think?) Allergan hopes to market its bimatoprost for cosmetic use.

If approved, it could mean getting rid of that goopy mascara permanently!

    Hi Catherine,

    Thanks for writing.

Unfortunately, we wouldn’t know where to buy these products online. However, we may be offering this service in the future. Please let us know if you’d like to be informed when we have the product available.

    Hi:

I have been using Lumigan for the last 5 years to treat glaucoma. Unfortunately, my eyelashes have not grown long and thick and beautiful. I guess it does not work for everyone. Just wanted to pass that on.

    Hi Carol,

Thanks for letting us know about your experience with the product.

We wonder if Allergan has modified this product to increase its effectiveness in growing eyelashes? At any rate, it’s unfortunate it didn’t do anything for you to enhance your lashes, though we’re assuming it worked for your glaucoma.

In general, every treatment doesn’t work for everyone it’s been prescribed to.

    Hello

Can you please tell me the difference of the MD lash factor and this new product Allergan (Lumigan)? Would you know the cost once this is FDA aproved? As per a question above, has the Allergan become available? With the MD lash factor, has there been any negitive effects or comments?
    Thank you

  9. alissa Says:

    Hi Debra,

    Thank you for your question.

The main difference between the two is that Latisse is an FDA approved drug which contains bimatoprost. MD Lash Factor is classified as a cosmetic that contains dechloro ethylcloprostenolamide. It has been shown to improve the appearance of the lashes by making them fuller, lusher and thicker by conditioning them. Latisse is currently approved by the FDA but is not available in Canada at the moment. We don’t know the price, but you can find out by searching physicians who offer the product.

Regarding negative effects, Latisse has been shown to cause itching in the eyes and/or eye redness, skin darkening, eye irritation, dryness of the eyes, and redness of the eyelids. MD Lash Factor has been shown to cause mild irritation, such as itchiness.

Hope this answers all of your questions!

I would be interested in finding out where I would purchase the Latisse in Alberta. I live in Calgary and wonder if one of the department stores would carry it.

    Hi Anne,

    Thanks for writing.

Latisse is not available in Canada yet. But when it does become available, it would probably be at a physician’s office, since it’s classified as a drug by the FDA.

In the meantime, MD Lash Factor may be a viable alternative. It’s an eyelash conditioner that can be applied at home (because it’s not a drug like Latisse) to help the lashes appear thicker and fuller. You can buy it online at our e-store for $169 + free shipping. Results appear in about a month.

    Hi Alissa,

I am VERY interested in getting ahold of Latisse – I have always had very fine/short lashes, but recently have lost a large number of lashes. There are actually spots on my upper lid that have no lashes (looks HORRIBLE)! Does Latisse / Lumigan regrow lashes? I can see they are growing – just extremely slow. I have scheduled an appt with the Dr. to get a prescription for the Lumigan – but wanted to confirm that it will (or aleast should) regrow the lashes. If not, what would you recommend?

Has there been any word on the date Latisse will be available in Canada?

  13. alissa Says:

    Hi Lisa,

Latisse has been shown to achieve successful results on individuals with hypotrichosis (no hair growth) and for those who have lost hair from chemotherapy, although it is marketed mainly as a product that can grow thicker, longer lashes where they already exist.

We do not know when Latisse will be approved in Canada, but we can let you know when it is.

(And just a warning: Although it is tempting to use Lumigan instead of Latisse right now, please be careful using any drug for a purpose that hasn’t been approved by the FDA/Health Canada!)

You may have success with MD Lash Factor, since you did mention that you have lashes in the areas that look bald. MD Lash Factor also works on areas where lashes exist, making them appear fuller, thicker and lusher. Plus, you don’t need a prescription for it! You can buy it online.
