2 Myths of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation and breast implants get a lot of bad press, most of which have been proven to be untrue. Don’t believe the negative hype, supported by insufficient research and invalid studies.

TCC wants to look at some of the most (in)famous rumors about the procedure and put them to rest. Finally.

Here are 2 typical myths of Breast Augmentation.

1. Silicone implants cause cancer. This is a fallacy, as proven by many studies performed by reputable scientific and medical organizations around the world, including the National Institute of Cancer (US). There is no connection between breast augmentation and the presence of silicone breast implants.

These days, silicone implants come in a cohesive gel form. As a result, in the event of rupture, the silicone will not leak into the body (though they will need to be replaced for safety).

In fact, many women who have had breast cancer seek reconstructive surgery to recreate a lost breast. This typically requires a breast implant, and in many cases, it is silicone.

However, silicone implants may slightly hinder the view of breast tissue during a mammogram, making breast cancer harder to detect. This can be easily remedied by informing the doctor or technician performing the mammogram that implants are present. A different technique may be used for detection, known as the Eklund method. This way, a clearer view of breast tissue will be obtained. Opting for submuscular implant placement can also allow for a clearer view.

2. Breast augmentation always reduces sensitivity in the nipples and other areas of the breast.

Did you know that breast augmentation can actually increase the sensitivity in the nipples and other areas of the breast?

In many instances, a difference in sensation is temporary.
