Liver Spots

Liver spots are concentrations of melanin in the skin which can be removed by specific laser treatments. They are small and darker coloured than the rest of the skin and most often appear in areas where the skin is frequently exposed by the sun: the face, shoulders, and back of the hands.

Are liver spots, also known as age spots, caused by some malfunction of the liver? Are they an indication of a weak liver? Let’s dispel that old wives’ tale.

The answer is no.

Liver spots are not related to the health of your liver. They are caused by other factors such as aging, sun exposure and hormonal imbalances. Why do we call them liver spots, then? Well, doctors used to believe they were because of some malfunction of the liver, but this has since been proven to be untrue.

Can Caffeine Beat Cellulite?

With the warmer months ahead, many of us will be donning shorter skirts and pants – except for those of us who don’t want to reveal their cellulite-ridden legs.

While Endermologie has been proven effective for the treatment of those dimply thighs (and deemed as a temporary solution to cellulite by the FDA), some of us may turn to those “magic lotions” and creams that are available on the market today. Many of those cellulite creams and lotions contain an ingredient that promises to reduce the appearance of cellulite: caffeine.

Yes, the same stuff in your coffee.

When topically applied to the desired area, caffeine is supposed to reduce the swelling of the areas around the fat pockets in order to make the skin appear smoother. Because caffeine also has diuretic properties, it is supposed to reduce the amount of trapped fluid in the area. However, there is currently no significant research to prove or disprove this theory. Results, if any, are normally very temporary.

We’d love to hear from you if you’ve tried one of these creams and  they’ve actually worked!

shaving.jpg

Did you know that scientists have proven that hair growth is not affected by shaving? While most of us believe that shaving makes the hair grow back thicker, it actually doesn’t. It just looks that way because each strand does not taper off as it usually does when left to grow to its full potential. Instead, it remains the same circumference for the whole length which is why it appears “thicker”.

But with shaving being so annoying and such a waste of time, we’re sure this little fact won’t help much in its wavering popularity. Why not take advantage of technology and explore laser hair removal instead? It’s fast, easy, and is permanent, much unlike shaving.

The Good News about Smoking?

Smoking, overall, is terrible for you. It constricts smaller blood vessels, preventing the healthy circulation of nutrients and oxygen to the skin. It increases the risk of lung cancer. It gives you bad breath. It has been blamed for the cause of many cardiovascular diseases. All that, and there’s still something good about it?

Well, apparently some scientists believe that smoking cigarettes helps to lose weight. While this may not be true for people, it was shown in laboratory research that mice exposed to cigarettes lost weight by affecting the body’s metabolism and how fat was stored.

So, it’s up to you. Get bad skin, hinder your circulation, and increase your chances of getting cancer and cardiovascular disease or try something else!

Cumin?

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Distinctly aromatic, cumin is an ancient spice that is an essential ingredient in many of the world’s finest cuisines. So what’s it got to do with bigger breasts?

Well, if you’ve ever checked out the ingredients of many breast enlargement creams, lotions, and magic potions on the market today, you’ll notice that most contain cumin. Why you ask?

Some believe that cumin has the capability to increase mammary cells. However, according to Dr. James A. Duke, this has only been proven in lab animals rather than humans, which makes this more of an old wives’ tale than fact.

But hey, who needs an excuse to eat curry anyway?
