Botox May Help Chronic Cough
Wednesday, July 28th, 2010A study by doctors at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Ear, Nose, & Throat Center of Fredericksburg has discovered that Botox can help people suffering from nagging chronic coughs, specifically when their condition has not positively responded to other more standard types of treatment. Botox may help to quiet coughs (but not eliminate them all together).
The study explored 438 individuals with laryngeal spasm and chronic cough. Four of the group diagnosed with chronic cough, three of whom were women, were treated with Botox injections targeting the thyroarytenoid muscles. The thyroarytenoid muscle is part of the vocal folds/chords, and the doctors targeted this because of the belief that Botox would help interrupt abnormal nerve feedback of the cough reflex.
Results show that following treatment, a significant relief of cough was reported. Several injections were administered.
The doctors believe that further research and followup are required to confirm results, since the study group was so small. There was also no comparison with alternative therapies.
