Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your question.
We won’t beat around the bush. Any medical treatment does have its own set of risks and complications, and cosmetic procedures are no different. But in order to adequately prepare, it is vital that an individual understands the good and the bad of each procedure. While we all know the good effects of liposuction (subcutaneous fat removal for an improved body contour), tummy tucks (removal of fat, excess skin and possible muscle tightening for an improved body contour) and sun spot removal (for an improved complexion), it is imperative to know the other side as well.
Here is a list of common possible side effects for each procedure:
liposuction - because this is an invasive procedure, side effects include those associated with anaesthesia. Other side effects specific for liposuction include swelling, bruising, minor bleeding and discomfort. All are considered temporary and are part of the regular recovery process. Some may also experience numbness in the area treated. Some more serious side effects include infection and skin necrosis. However, the chance of these occurring are dramatically reduced when an experienced and qualified physician is selected to perform the procedure.
tummy tuck - again, side effects related to anaesthesia exist. Some swelling, bleeding and bruising may also occur. A collection of serous fluid (seroma) may result. A serious side effect of tummy tucks is deep vein thrombosis.
sun spot removal - because a laser is used, common side effects include those associated with a sunburn (redness, sensitivity). These are considered temporary and will fade. In some cases, discolouration may occur but with time this will also resolve itself.
If you would like to find out more about the procedures you’re interested in, we recommend you speak with our patient consultant in a complimentary consultation. As a medical professional, they will be able to supply more comprehensive information.
