The Mask Of Pregnancy

Usually, skin pigmentation is even and uniform in colour and tone. However, in some areas, the colouring of the skin may be darker or lighter. When there are darker spots on the skin caused by an excess of melanin, this is called hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is caused by many factors. Sometimes, it could be the result of aging or prolonged sun exposure. In the case of sun exposure, hyperpigmentation occurs because the skin is actually trying to protect itself.

Dark spots often appear on the face, back of the hands and shoulders, all areas where sun exposure is most common. Also known as melasma, the condition is more of an aesthetic problem rather than a serious health condition (but if they skin is raised or damaged in the discoloured areas, make sure to have it checked out by a dermatologist!)

The Mask Of Pregnancy
Although you may have that “glow” when you’re pregnant, another thing you may also get are dark spots on the face. Known as the mask of pregnancy, or chloasma, this type of hyperpigmentation is a result of hormonal balances that upset normal productions of melanin.

At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, we have two laser devices that are used for non-invasive cosmetic treatments: the Lyra Laser and the Sciton Laser.

The Lyra Laser is an excellent device to treat those of all skin tones and hair types. Ideal for those with darker skin tones and thicker darker hair, it is currently used for laser hair removal and laser skin resurfacing at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic.

The Sciton Profile Laser is a Broadband Light Source device manufactured by Sciton. Excellent to treat larger areas, it is used in the non-surgical cosmetic treatments of laser hair removal and photofacial rejuvenation. For laser hair removal, it is excellent for all skin and hair types. It works best on those with thinner and lighter hair.

A Little History

Did you know that techniques to exfoliate the skin have been around since the Ancient Egyptians? They used to rub hard substances, like rocks, sand and other hard materials, on the skin to scrape away dead skin and dirt. In fact, people still use these techniques today.

But before you grab a handful of sand and rub it all over your face, you should know that these hard materials can ruin your complexion by being way too harsh. They can irritate the epidermis and even cut into the skin, causing infection and scarring. There are other modern techniques and substances that are used for exfoliation that are far more gentle for the skin. Want to know what they are? Call us to find out more information!

Microdermabrasion vs. Dermabrasion

They sound the same, but actually microdermabrasion and dermabrasion are two very different cosmetic surgical treatments. While both remove layers of the skin, dermabrasion is a surgical procedure that involves anesthesia and extensive recovery time. It is designed to remove more than one layer, down to the dermis (the second layer of skin under the epidermis).

On the other hand, microdermabrasion is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that removes the very top layer of skin - that layer with the dead skin cells, dirt and grime. Although it doesn’t treat deep wrinkles and scarring as effectively as dermabrasion, microdermabrasion is consider a far safer treatment with fewer risks and a shorter recovery time. In fact, while you heal, you won’t need dressings for the treated area. Just a good sunscreen!

Most likely, you’ll need more than one session of microdermabrasion to treat those fine wrinkles and blemishes you want to get rid of. Find out more by emailing or contacting us!

Bring Back the Glow

Is your skin losing its glow this winter? For a quick refresher, why not come in for a quick microdermabrasion session?

Microdermabrasion, using the Diamond Dermabrasion™ system, is a great way to remove that layer of dead skin cells, dirt and grime clogging your pores that suffocates the skin and prevents it from glowing. It can even reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles and minor discolorations. The procedure takes under one hour and is virtually painless.
