Chinese women want faces shaped like goose eggs, according to a recent poll conducted by Horizon Research Consultancy Group and reported by the China Daily newspaper.

1,600 people residing in eastern provinces of China were surveyed, aged 18 to 55. Of the people surveyed, 33% of females seeking surgical improvement wanted to correct the shape of their face so that it would be more oval, resembling the shape of a goose egg.

When Zero Isn’t Nothing

In recent years, we’ve all begun to realize the danger of trans fatty acids, known unaffectionately as trans fats. Artery-clogging trans fats are commonly found in foods that contain hydrogenated oils, but can also exist in some meats and milk products naturally.

While nutritional information on that pack of chips or bag of doughnuts often lists the amount of trans fats present, don’t think that zero actually means nothing.

According to guidelines set by the FDA, nutritional labels on products that state zero can actually have up to 0.5 gram (1/2 g) of trans fats. Chances are, if the ingredients say hydrogenated oil, whether partial or not, the product has some amount of trans fats.

What’s SPF?

Wearing sunscreen lotion with a high SPF is good practice to protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. But what does SPF stand for anyway?

SPF is an acronym for Sun Protection Factor. Generally, the SPF of a sunscreen allows the user to stay in the sun for a specific period of time before they get red (which means their skin is burned). For example, light skin tends to get burned in about 6 minutes when left unprotected. This length of time is called the minimal erythema dose (MED for short). So, if a person with light skin wears an SPF of 20, you multiply the SPF of 20 with their MED of 6. That person will then, theoretically, be able to stay in the sun for about 120 minutes before they get red. Sound confusing? Here’s the formula:

SPF rating x your MED=length of time safe to stay in the sun.

Therefore, it’s important that you wear a sunscreen with an SPF suitable for your skin. Consider how long you’ll be staying in the sun, and remember that lighter skin tends to turn red in a shorter time than darker skin.

Laser Hair Removal

At TCC, there are two devices that are utilized for laser hair removal: the Lyra and the Sciton. While most of our clients achieve desirable results from undergoing treatment with either device, in some instances, one may be more effective than the other. The most suitable device for you depends on your skin and hair type.

If you have pale skin and fair hair is also fine, our medical aestheticians will most likely recommend the Sciton.

Those with darker skin and hair are generally treated more effectively with the Lyra. The Lyra is also effective for coarse hair.

And don’t be surprised if, though the course of your treatment, that the device you started off with is switched with another. Since hair becomes finer as treatments progress, you may switch to the Sciton to get rid of those last straggly strands.
