Problems Targeted by Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is designed to target several types of problems men and women have that they may find as undesirable features of their eyes. Because the eyes are such an important part of the face, these features tend to make them look haggard and worn out. Common problems include droopy eyelids, bags underneath the eyes, and puffiness. A cosmetic surgeon performing eyelid surgery can also create a “double” upper eyelid.

A typical eyelid surgical procedure removes excess fat, skin, and muscle. However, in the event that only fat is removed, the procedure is called transconjunctival blepharoplasty.

Droopy Eyes and Bags

Droopy eyes are commonly the result of excess fat deposits in the eyelid area which weigh down the lids, and may also be combined with the existence of poor skin elasticity in the area. The upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both can be affected. Droopiness in the lower eyelids contributes to the development of bags underneath the eyes. People with droopy eyes usually appear tired all the time, even after a good night's rest. Their eyelids may be so weighed down to the point that they impair vision. As a result, some seeking eyelid surgery to correct droopiness do so not only for aesthetic reasons.

Please note that blepharoplasty is not suitable to correct crow's feet and does not reduce the appearance of dark circles. Consult a cosmetic surgeon at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic to make sure that eyelid surgery is suitable for you, as other options may be more appropriate.

Puffiness

When you're young, puffy eyes are a rare occurrence. It may be because you have allergies or you've cried too much. Unfortunately, puffy eyes become more common as we age, making us look tired and older than we are.

If you're relatively healthy and your puffy eyes are not caused by a medical condition, eyelid surgery may be able to help.

Like droopy eyes, puffy eyes are caused by excess fat deposits in the eyelids. This may be combined with flaccid skin and loose muscles. Age and sun damage are factors, though it can also be the result of hereditary reasons.

Creating a Double Eyelid

A “double” eyelid refers to the crease that exists in the upper eyelid. For some people, particularly many of East Asian descent, this crease does not exist. Whether their eyes are open or closed, the area from the upper eyelashes to the eyebrow remains as a single smooth plane.

The crease in the upper eyelid is believed to accentuate the eyes, making them look bigger and brighter. It is for this reason that many seek eyelid surgery for its ability to create this crease or double eyelid.
