Tell me more about blepharoplasty.

Blepharoplasty, more commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that is designed to improve the aesthetic apperance of the eyes and/or make them look more youthful. The procedure may require the removal of excess skin, fat, and atrophied muscle. Both the upper and lower eyelids can be targeted.

What problems can eyelid surgery correct?

Several problems can be targeted, including droopy eyelids, puffiness, and the lack of a double eyelid (a crease in the upper eyelid).

A benefit of eyelid surgery that is more practical includes the improvement of vision from the removal of sagging skin and excess fat.

What problems cannot be corrected by eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery has not been designed to target crow's feet, those creases extending from the outer corners of the eyes. It may also not be suitable for those who suffer from congenital defects, which have been pinpointed as the cause of their aesthetic problems. These congenital defects include those related to a problematic thyroid (such as hypothyroidism or Graves' disease).

It is vital that fluid retention around the eyes is not mistaken for excess fat, as eyelid surgery has not been designed to target such.

Individuals who have poor skin elasticity may not be suitable candidates for the procedure.

Who can undergo eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is best performed on those who have realistic expectations of the outcome of the procedure and are in relatively good mental and physical health. Because this is an optional cosmetic procedure, individuals should make the choice to go ahead with surgery based on their own decisions. That way, the outcome is generally more satisfying.

During an initial consultation, you will be able to discuss your expectations and goals with a medical professional in order to determine whether eyelid surgery is appropriate for you. Alternatives that are more suitable may be presented during this consultation.

At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, clients who undergo eyelid surgery are generally those who have succumbed to the signs of aging and are dissatisfied with the aesthetic appearance of their eyes (usually middle-aged).

What type of anesthesia is used?

Local anesthesia with sedation is generally administered.

Tell me more about the procedure itself.

The actual surgery depends on the extent of correction and the problem targeted. The following is a general outline:

After being placed under anesthesia, incisions are made within the natural creases of the eyelids so that any resulting scars remain well hidden. Excess fat and skin are removed and then the incisions are closed with sutures.

The experienced physicians at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic will ensure that only the necessary amount of fat and/or skin is removed to achieve a desirable outcome so that hollowness does not result.

What happens after the surgery?

Following surgery, you should expect some degree of swelling, bruising and discomfort. Some pain relief medication may be prescribed to you by your cosmetic surgeon. You may also have dry or watery eyes, and your vision may be blurry. All of these side effects are considered temporary and can last up to 4 weeks.

Any sutures, if they are not dissolvable, will be taken out a few days following the surgery.

To assist in recovery, your cosmetic surgeon may recommend that you keep your head elevated when lying down to prevent the accumulation of fluids. Strenuous activity should be avoided during a specific period of time as outlined by your cosmetic surgeon. A complete list of post-operative care instructions will be given to you prior to surgery.

What are the risks associated with eyelid surgery?

All surgery carries some risk. Those related to eyelid surgery include temporary side effects such as blurry vision, swelling, discomfort and bruising.

In the event too much fat is removed, a hollowness around the eyes may result. The risk of this occuring is dramatically reduced when an experienced and knowledgeable cosmetic surgeon performs the procedure.
