What You Should Know before Going under the Knife for Rhinoplasty
The decision to get rhinoplasty is an extremely personal one. You have to speak with a surgeon and determine whether your expectations are realistic. Furthermore, you have to be well aware of both the benefits and risks of the procedure. Here are some important factors to consider prior to signing that consent form.
All Surgeries Come with Some Risk
There is always the risk of complication when you undergo rhinoplasty. Some types of complications that may arise include infection, bleeding, anesthesia risk, and poor wound healing. However, if reconstructive nose surgery is performed by a qualified cosmetic surgeon, the likelihood of complications occurring is minimal.
A Second Procedure May Be Required
Approximately one in ten rhinoplasty patients may require a second procedure in the future to remove or correct tissue. The need for a Secondary Rhinoplasty or Revision Rhinoplasty is largely unpredictable, and can arise even if your surgeon is highly qualified. Fortunately, revisions are usually very minor.
Insurance Companies Do Not Cover the Costs of Cosmetic Nose Surgery
Most insurance companies do not cover the costs of a rhinoplasty that is sought for purely cosmetic reasons. Typically, insurance companies only cover the costs of reconstructive nose surgery for functional purposes, such as to alleviate breathing difficulties caused by obstruction. Even if you’re getting reconstructive nose surgery for functional purposes, check with your insurance company to find out exactly how much they are willing to cover.
The Results of Surgery May Not Be What You Had Hoped For
No matter how skilled your surgeon may be, there is a chance that you will be unhappy with the final result of your rhinoplasty. However, as long as you have clear, realistic expectations that match those of your doctor, you’re likely to be content with the results of the procedure.
It Can Take Up to One Year for the Final Results of Surgery to Become Evident
Although most of the swelling from rhinoplasty will go down within a month after surgery, the remaining swelling may take up to one year to subside. As such, you won’t be able to see the final results of surgery until up to one year has passed. Some patients may feel depressed immediately following surgery because the results of the procedure aren’t yet evident. It’s essential to be patient and allow for sufficient recovery time in order to see the final results. It can be comforting to remember that after full recovery, the majority of patients feel satisfied with their new look.
