Breast Implant Shells
Breast implants for breast augmentation are designed as a pliable sac, or shell, filled with saline or gel. The shell is normally constructed out of silicone elastomer, an elastic rubber material. Added are minuscule amounts of metals, traces of organic compounds such as xylene, and particles of tightly bound silica in a finely powdered form. This combination of substances constitute an extremely durable material that has been deemed safe by the FDA for internal use.
Smooth or Textured?
The surface of breast implants can be textured or smooth. Implants with a smooth shell surface are not as palpable and are often softer, offering a more natural feel. They are ideal for women who are thinner skinned. In fact most surgeons use the smooth implants.
Some may think that there is a lower incidence of capsular contracture with the textured implants but this has not been proven.
At Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, experienced cosmetic surgeons utilize both the smooth and textured breast implants produced by Mentor during breast augmentation. A medical products supplier serving the health care industry worldwide since 1969, Mentor has performed comprehensive research on larger numbers of women receiving their breast implant product range. Mentor's clinical studies have shown that the chances of capsular contracture occurring in women with textured or smooth Mentor implants are the same.
The Shape of the Breast Implant
The shape of your breast implants can be round or contoured (also known as anatomical implants). The most common type of implant used is the smooth round implant. These implants look and feel very natural, and have the least complications.
It is best to discuss the benefits of each shape with your cosmetic surgeon at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic prior to your breast augmentation procedure.
The Size of the Breast Implant
Most women prefer to have breasts that are proportionate to their body. If you are unsure of what your ideal breast size is when looking into breast augmentation, consider the measurements of your body and what size would be most appropriate and natural for you. Typically, women augment their breast size up to 2 cup sizes (for example, an A cup to a C cup). Anything more can pose problems to other parts of a patient's anatomy, such as pain in the back or shoulders.
The ideal size of your breast implants should be determined by you and your cosmetic surgeon at Toronto Cosmetic Clinic. Outline your expectations with your cosmetic surgeon during consultation. We recommend that you bring a bra, non-padded and around the size that interests you so we can fit different implant sizers to determine the size that most suits you. We also ask clients to bring in pictures of breasts they like or dislike so that we can better address the individual’s issues and concerns.
